WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP LIKE AT KOSPRO?

18/09/2022

Jenni Ronkainen, who interned with us from spring to the end of summer 2022, shares her experiences.

"Hi, I'm Jenni Ronkainen.

I completed my internship at Kospro as part of my studies between April and August 2022. During my internship, I got to work on various procurement tasks for different projects, ranging from identifying and contacting contractors to sending out requests for quotations and comparing offers. Additionally, I participated in a wide range of administrative tasks, such as maintaining procurement and supplier registers, creating feedback surveys, and working on training materials. My internship also included updating social media and websites, assisting with funding applications, and organizing participation in the FinnBuild fair.

During my internship, I learned how construction procurement works when outsourced and gained a lot of specific construction industry terminology. I now have a better understanding of the overall process of construction contracts and the various stages involved in construction projects."

"It has been eye-opening to see the immense work required to complete a construction project. For instance, I didn't know before that a large apartment building site could involve up to 120 different procurement packages."

Where have you succeeded and what did you realize during the internship?

"I have succeeded the most in surpassing myself by performing tasks whose content is new to me as a relatively new student in the field. Having only studied the technical field for two years, I do not always believe in or trust my own abilities, although I have a good foundation from previous work and study history. Even though the field is completely new, a bold, open-minded, and open attitude takes you far."

Is there something you will apply to your everyday life, for example, working methods or practices?

"I will definitely continue to work just as agilely in the future and participate as actively by boldly proposing my own views. During the internship, I noticed that the work culture of a young and growing company suits me. It's motivating that there are many irons in the fire at the same time, and priorities change on the fly. It's easy to develop and change processes. The best part, of course, is getting to participate in a variety of different tasks. I used numerous new systems, and especially the task management system, which was new to me, was very clear and helpful."

What is the most memorable memory?

"Besides learning many new things, what I remember most is the excellent work community. In small companies, you get to know people in a very different way, and I am grateful for how well I was received and immediately made part of the team. Colleagues greatly influence job satisfaction and well-being, and this internship was memorable because of the team spirit."

How have you learned to use/combine the theory learned at school and the practical knowledge gained now?

"I have always been logical and straightforward. I feel that technical education reinforces this way of thinking, which I have also utilized in my field work. Technical skills, of course, only strengthen through practice and over time, but the courses I took in school have played a part in why I understand construction technology."

What tips would you like to give to others going for an internship?

"Boldly apply for internships in smaller and newer companies: you get to do a lot and quickly. Use the internship periods during your studies to work in new tasks and companies. Networking is always worth it for the future, and good work is remembered.

I will now continue my studies and focus on that. However, I will return to work at the FinnBuild fair in October, and you can spot me at the Kospro booth throughout the fair. Will we see each other there?"

Energy for the autumn!
