NEWS ABOUT PROMOTING LOW-CARBON CONSTRUCTION - COOPERATION AND LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER!

29/01/2025

In our KIRAilmasto development project, which was completed in the summer, we explored how low-carbon solutions, and more broadly sustainable construction, can be integrated into procurement processes: at what level can we consider the goals in procurement and, above all, promote the achievement of the goals. Professional procurement can significantly influence the realization of low-carbon objectives in projects, especially when procurement is involved in goal planning from the early stages of the project. In the September results release event, the discussion particularly highlighted the importance of cooperation in promoting low-carbon solutions and setting clear goals at different stages of construction. The shift towards more low-carbon and sustainable construction happens when all parties involved in the project are committed to common goals.

After the project, the promotion of low-carbon solutions and the sharing and growing of our expertise has continued. One of our favorite collaborations: together with Granlund, we produced an eight-part e-learning series on low-carbon construction for the Ministry of the Environment, where Kospro's contribution is particularly visible in the last module, Procurement for Low-Carbon Construction. It was amazing to work with top experts on such an important theme, and we learned and experienced new things throughout the process! We hope that as many people as possible will gain useful tools and ideas from this training to promote low-carbon construction in their own work! If you haven't heard about or explored this training yet, take a look at the Decarbonized Construction training package.

Secondly, I would like to highlight the Kospro Webinars that started in September, where we dive into a current topic for about 30 minutes. The first webinar topic was naturally the Implementation of Low-Carbon Procurement Processes, and it was great to see how many people joined! We have now had two of these, and we will continue with the webinars in early 2024. Stay tuned for more updates on LinkedIn!

Thirdly, we participated in the Circular Economy Design for Renovation Projects workshop organized by TAMK. In the workshop, we discussed with industry players the changes required to promote the circular economy in construction processes, how decision-making should be challenged, and who should be involved at each stage of the process. The importance of collaboration and extensive knowledge sharing in process development was emphasized throughout the day.

Lastly, I want to highlight the FinnBuild fair. We had the opportunity to take the stage, and given the undeniable importance of collaboration, it was clear that our panel discussion topic would be "The Importance of Collaboration in Promoting Low-Carbon Practices in the Early Stages of Projects". Katarina Varteva from A-Insinöörit and Tiia-Lotta Tuominen from Granlund joined us in discussing how low-carbon goals can be integrated throughout projects, from goal setting to project completion and through the entire lifecycle. Thanks again to both for the excellent discussion, more of these to come!

To develop, we need more than just discussions and training – we need pilot projects where we can create change and new practices and share them. I am eagerly looking forward to what this year will bring!
